No Name-Calling Week January 23-27, 2012

Inspired by the YA novel, The Misfits by James Howe, No Name-Calling Week (NNCW) is an annual opportunity for students to discuss their experiences and feelings towards name-calling and bullying schools.

In this day and age name-calling and bullying happens in all areas of life, at home and in school. What may seem like simple joking to one person may be very hurtful to another. Take a few minutes to learn more about the differences between name-calling and bullying:

Name-calling is calling others mean names and labels. You have the right to be called the name you want, and to not be called hurtful or mean names.

Bullying is aggressive behavior that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power or strength. Bullying can take many forms such as:

Hitting or shoving (physical bullying)
Teasing or taunting (verbal bullying)
Intimidation through gestures or social exclusion (nonverbal bullying or emotional bullying)
Sending insulting or threatening messages by phone or internet (cyber bullying)

Doodle 4 Google Contest

Design a doodle using the Google logo

The contest:

This contest is open to students in grades K-12

The man who inspired the book...that inspired the movie...

Georges Melies

Born in Paris in 1861, Maries Georges Jean Melies showed an interest in the arts at an early age. After buying the famous Theatre Robert Houdin, Melies worked full time as a theatrical showman performing magic. After witnessing the profound invention of cinematography Melies was immediately captured. Understanding the the theatrical element that could be enhanced by film, Melies revolutionized cinematography by pioneering camera techniques still used today; double exposure, split screen with performers acting opposite themselves and the dissolve.

In an effort to highlight Live-brary.com's invaluable Homework Help and tutoring services, today is Homework Help Day! Live-brary.com is a cooperative project of the public libraries of Suffolk County. It presents a one-stop, digital branch for Suffolk County public library cardholders to access online resources.

Live-brary.com Homework Help is:

Convenient:

Available to students K-12 with an East Islip Library card.
Tutors are available Monday through Sunday from 2pm-11pm.
A 24-hour writing lab allows students to submit essays and other forms of writing for constructive feedback.

Varied:

Tutors are trained in math, science, reading/writing, social studies and general skills.
As the school year progresses, tutors will also offer assistance in PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP and New York state standardized tests.

Safe:

Homework Help tutors are trained and certified. All tutors have been cleared with thorough background checks and must possess a four-year degree and have prior teaching/tutoring experience.

Celebrating reading by connecting teens and authors

A FREE full-day event open to everyone, but teens get preferred seating. Meet dynamic authors of young adult literature. Break out sessions with the following authors: Tonya Hurley, Robert Lipsyte, George O'Connor, Rita Williams-Garcia, Maryrose Atwood, Coe Booth, Tricia Rayburn, Daniel Ehrenhaft, Anna Godbersen, Alyssa Sheinmel, Adam Gidwitz and Jim McCann. Cool giveaways, books for sale and autographing will be available. LIMITED tickets for teens will be available at the library beginning on April 1, 2011. Please note: this program takes place at St. Joseph's College, Patchogue, NY and attendees are responsible for their own transportation to and from this event.

As if that's not enough....

24 lucky Suffolk County teens will be selected to volunteer to pair with an author for the entire day. Applications for this opportunity my be submitted by Friday, March 18, 2011. What better way to earn volunteer credit than by doing something as fun as hanging out with an author all day?

Don't miss the deadline to enter this fun, library-wide photography contest. Just take a picture of your cat, dog, fish, bird, turtle, frog, iguana, gecko, snake, rabbit, hamster or gerbil reading their favorite book. Catch Your Pet Reading Photography Contest

CALLING ALL AMATEUR PHOTGRAPHERS!

Join our library wide photography contest in which participants will catch their pets reading. Photos may be of any household pet (can include owner).

The contest will be divided into three categories:
Adult (18 and older)
Young Adult (grades 7-12)

Children (grades K-6)

Photos must be submitted by 9pm on Monday, January 31, 2011.

You Are Here Teen Video Challenge
A video challenge for legal U.S. residents aged 13 to 18.

What you need to do: Create a public service announcement that promotes the fun of reading and the idea of using public libraries to learn about ourselves and the wonderful and diverse world.

What you can submit: A video between 30 and 90 seconds long.

When you need to have it in: Videos and signed model release forms must be submitted to Kassia Worst at the East Islip Public Library by March 3, 2011.

What you will be judged on: Creativity, message clarity and relevance, motivation and inspiration and overall impact.

What you could win: Each State Teen Video Challenge Winner will receive $250.

The YA Department would like to wish every one of you a Happy Thanksgiving. As we reflect on the things for which we are thankful, we can't help but think of our wonderful patrons. This community is so wonderful to serve and is comprised of such a great bunch of teens!

But don't let the good feelings stop here...In the spirit of the season, the Library will be collecting new winter clothing accessories (mittens, hats, scarves, etc.) through December to donate to families in need. Need comes in all sizes, so items of any size, color and fabric are welcomed.
