6th Annual Mitten Tree



 In the spirit of the season, the East Islip Public Library will once again be collecting new winter clothing accessories to be donated to families in need.  Bring in any new mittens, hats, socks, scarves, etc. and we will display your name on a paper mitten on our Mitten Tree bulletin board in the Children's Room.  Need comes in all sizes; items of any size, color and fabric are welcomed.

We will accept donations through the end of December.

Thursday, November 6, 7-8pm, Grades 7-12
Come take part in our lively discussion about books, music, movies and everything else in between.  Create a lovely autumn bulletin board with your fellow teens with a timely Thanksgiving theme.  Bring a friend; snacks will be served.  Participating members will receive on hour of community service.


Monday, November 24, 5:30-6:15pm, Grades 5+
You'll create these cute yarn pumpkins to decorate your room or your family's Thanksgiving table.





Thursday, December 4, 7-8pm, Grades 7-12
Come and create a festive bulletin board and decorate the Teen Bistro with your fellow teens.  We will discuss books and share holiday wish lists.  Bring a friend and enough wrapping paper for two books; members will write a short synopsis for each gift-wrapped book and create a holiday display  Create a lovely autumn bulletin board with your fellow teens with a timely Thanksgiving theme.  
Snacks will be served.  Participating members will receive on hour of community service.

Create fun, seasonal themed decorations that can be displayed on your home windows.

Create a festive fresh flower arrangement to enjoy for the holiday season.  $2.50 is due in cash when you sign up for the program at the Adult Reference Desk.

For the month of October the EIPL Teen Advisory Board is collecting items for the Islip Animal Shelter cats and dogs.  The donation box is located across from the Circulation Desk.  

Please donate any clean, used or new towels, blankets, toys and food today!

Thank you for your generosity.  Your kindness will make a dog's day and a cat's day too!

School is back in session and we're getting ready for the fall in the YA department.  Over the next two months, we are offering some informational classes and some fun classes.  Take a look and make sure to sign up!


Thursday, September 4, 7-8pm, Grades 7-12
Welcome back!  If you have never been to a TAB meeting, now is the best time to join.  Come and share a book review, movie review and best teen library program attended this summer with your fellow teens.  Snacks will be served.  Bring your creativity and a friend.  All participating members will receive one hour of community service.  Returning members, please note the day change.
Saturday, September 20, 10am-1pm, Grades 6-9, Fee $10.00 CASH
Bring a snack and learn the skills to become a great babysitter.  Topics covered include: child safety, developmental stages of children and how to plan activities that are age appropriate.  You will receive a certificate upon completion.  Please bring $10.00 in exact change when you register at the Reference Desk.

Thursday, October 2, 7-8pm, Grades 7-12
It's not too late to join TAB!  Join us for a lively book discussion and then help decorate our bulletin board to match the spirit of Halloween.  October is Adopt-a Shelter-Pet Month and TAB members will again be collecting much needed blankets and towels for donation to our local animal shelters.  Please support as we help these shelter animals.  Snacks will be served.  Bring a friend.  All participating members will receive one hour of community service.

This six-session series meant to familiarize students with the SAT will be taught by two certified, experienced teachers.  Students will be required to buy the textbook: McGraw-Hill SAT, 2014 or 2015 edition.  Please bring your library card and an $80.00 non-refundable check, made payable to Chris Cowan, when you register at the Reference Desk.

Pumpkins, pumpkins everywhere!  Join us to make this festive paper flower craft. Registration begins Monday, September 15.

Deadlines! Deadlines?!

Though summer isn't officially over, it is winding down here in the Young Adult Department.

Summer Reading Club final reporting date: Friday, August 15 (until 6pm)

YA Photography Contest voting:

Make sure you submit your last reading cards and that you've picked your favorite photo in the Teen Bistro!

Young Adult 
Photography Contest

East Islip community members entering grades 7-12 are invited to participate in our 6th Annual Young Adult Photography Contest.  



Entries must be:
  • 8" x 10" (please do not submit mounted or framed photographs)
  • Black and white or color
  • Of an appropriate nature of any subject you choose
Entries will be displayed in the Teen Bistro from August 1-August 15.  During this time your peers will vote upon a winner.  The first place winners' entry will be framed and hung permanently in the Teen Bistro.

Please submit up to two photos with a parent or guardian signed entry form no later than 9pm on Thursday, July 31.

This is a great way to earn recognition for your work and also to become a permanent part of the Teen Bistro.  Don't miss this wonderful opportunity!

2014 YA Summer Reading Club

We invite young adults going into grades 7-12, to sign up for our Summer Reading Club.

Starting Monday, June 30, you may begin to record any books you read on a special Reporting Card (required summer reading counts!) that we will provide to you. You may exchange these cards at the Reference Desk for raffle tickets that you can put towards the prize of your choice.  For every five books you read this summer, your name will automatically be placed in a raffle for our grand prize, a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. Just make sure to have your cards in by the club’s end on Friday, August 15.

Simply, the more books you read, the more tickets you get.  Plus, you get one free raffle ticket just for signing up!

2014 YA Summer Programs

Registration for our summer programs begins today for East Islip Library cardholders (out of district cardholders may register starting Monday, June 9).   All programs are open to those entering grades 6-12 in September.  Only one program requires in-person registration.  There are three programs that have a small fee, but they only need to be paid the night of the program! 


Fizzing Bath Salts  EIY741
Monday, July 7, 7-8pm, Entering grades 6-12, Fee: $5 cash
Combine your own natural bath salts with scented essential oils that will fizz as soon as they hit bathwater.  There is a $5 program fee to be paid in cash the night of the program. 


Tuesday, July 8, 7-8pm, Entering grades 6-12.
A cipher is a concealed message where the letters of the message are substituted or transposed for other letters.  George Washington, Julius Caesar and Napoleon all sent secret messages this way.  Make a cipher wheel and a crazy code-book, learn encryption and decryption and send secret messages to your friends!

Calling all actors!  Attend these dramatic workshops and learn the art of improvisation, hone your acting skills, perfect our deliverance of monologues and even work on a bit of writing.  Student actors will critique their videotaped performances on the last session, promoting their directing talents as well!

Mix some mystery substances to make slimy matter and gooey worms.

Join us for a beginner watercolor class where you will create an abstract design with watercolor and salt.  You will complete a project to take home.  This program involves materials that could get on clothing so please dress appropriately.

Embellish bangle bracelets to match your style and then create a cute felt envelope to keep them safe.

Learn the science of crime scene investigation techniques: fingerprints, chromatography, shoe print analysis and hair and fiber evidence.  Then apply these techniques to examine the evidence of a crime to figure out who done it.

Become a structural engineer; design a roller coaster ride using the Earth's gravity to make a marble roll over enough twists and turns to make your hair stand on end.

Learn how to manicure, decorate and care for your nails like a professional.  You will receive an individual nail kit that includes nail file, buffer block, orange-wood stick, nail polish and a variety of decorations.  Please note: there is a $5 nail kit fee to be paid in cash, the night of the program.

Learn a variety of cake decorating techniques to create the look of an erupting volcano mini cake.
