2014 YA Summer Programs

Registration for our summer programs begins today for East Islip Library cardholders (out of district cardholders may register starting Monday, June 9).   All programs are open to those entering grades 6-12 in September.  Only one program requires in-person registration.  There are three programs that have a small fee, but they only need to be paid the night of the program! 


Fizzing Bath Salts  EIY741
Monday, July 7, 7-8pm, Entering grades 6-12, Fee: $5 cash
Combine your own natural bath salts with scented essential oils that will fizz as soon as they hit bathwater.  There is a $5 program fee to be paid in cash the night of the program. 


Tuesday, July 8, 7-8pm, Entering grades 6-12.
A cipher is a concealed message where the letters of the message are substituted or transposed for other letters.  George Washington, Julius Caesar and Napoleon all sent secret messages this way.  Make a cipher wheel and a crazy code-book, learn encryption and decryption and send secret messages to your friends!




Library Laboratory  EIY740
Thursday, July 9, 7-7:45pm, Entering grades 6-12.
Experiment at the library!  Defy physics, create lightning and go home with a scientific creation we make in our library laboratory.



Monday, July 14; Wednesday, July 16; Monday, July 21; Wednesday, July 23 & Thursday, July 24, 5-6:30pm, Entering grades 6-12.
Calling all actors!  Attend these dramatic workshops and learn the art of improvisation, hone your acting skills, perfect our deliverance of monologues and even work on a bit of writing.  Student actors will critique their videotaped performances on the last session, promoting their directing talents as well!

Monday, July 14, 7-8pm, Entering grades 6-12.
Be shocked and amazed as you explore the secrets of electricity and how it plays a part in things large and small; from the universe to gadgets and toys.

Thursday, July 17, 8:45-10:45pm, Entering grades 6-12.
The library will be closed to the public, but open to you!  Join us after hours where we will enjoy the empty main level and some food.  Please note: you must hand in a signed permission slip when you sign up for this program at the Reference Desk. 
 
Slime & Goo  EIY717
Monday, July 21, 7-8pm, Entering grades 6-12.
Mix some mystery substances to make slimy matter and gooey worms.



Watercolor Workshop  EIY736
Wednesday, July 23, 7-8:30pm, Entering grades 6-12.
Join us for a beginner watercolor class where you will create an abstract design with watercolor and salt.  You will complete a project to take home.  This program involves materials that could get on clothing so please dress appropriately.

Thursday, July 24, 7-8pm, Entering grades 6-12.
Embellish bangle bracelets to match your style and then create a cute felt envelope to keep them safe.


Monday, July 28, 7-8pm, Entering grades 6-12.
Learn the science of crime scene investigation techniques: fingerprints, chromatography, shoe print analysis and hair and fiber evidence.  Then apply these techniques to examine the evidence of a crime to figure out who done it.
 
Roller Coasters  EIY723Wednesday, July 30, 7-8:30pm, Entering grades 6-12.
Become a structural engineer; design a roller coaster ride using the Earth's gravity to make a marble roll over enough twists and turns to make your hair stand on end.


Manicure Class  EIY744Thursday, August 7, 7-8:30pm, Entering grades 6-12, Fee: $5 cash
Learn how to manicure, decorate and care for your nails like a professional.  You will receive an individual nail kit that includes nail file, buffer block, orange-wood stick, nail polish and a variety of decorations.  Please note: there is a $5 nail kit fee to be paid in cash, the night of the program.


Erupting Volcano Mini Cakes  EIY742Wednesday, August 13, 7-8pm, Entering grades 6-12.
Learn a variety of cake decorating techniques to create the look of an erupting volcano mini cake.




Back to School Erasers  EIY743Thursday, August 14, 7-8pm, Entering grades 6-12, Fee: $5 cash
Learn how to use modeling tools to creatively sculpt clay that can amazingly be used as a pencil eraser.  Make sure to attend this program, you won't want to go back to school without these!  Please note: there is a $5 fee to be paid in cash, the night of the program.
